Remove element from list Python

In this post, you will see how to remove an element from a list using the Python programming language.

A list is a sequence of indexed and ordered values, like an array. It is mutable, which means we can change the order of elements in a list. It contains a list of any type of data object with a comma separated and enclosed within a square bracket. Each element of the list has an index, starting with 0 , 1, and so on. In the development process, we may come to a situation in which we need to decrease the size of the list by removing elements from it.

In Python, there are numerous methods available on the list data type that help you to eliminate an element from a given list.

Remove element from list using pop()

The pop() method removes the element at the specified index position. The syntax of the pop() method.

list.pop(index)

Here, the index is optional and specifies the position of the element you want to remove. By default, it removes the last element from the list. Here is the example:

list_elems = ['bread', 'cookies', 'chocolate', 'tea', 'cake']

# Remove last element from list
list_elems.pop()
print(list_elems)

# Remove second element from list
list_elems.pop(1)
print(list_elems)

['bread', 'cookies', 'chocolate', 'tea']
['bread', 'chocolate', 'tea']

Remove element from list using del statement

In Python, del is a keyword. We can use this del keyword to delete any object, like - lists, variables, user-defined objects, items within lists, dictionaries, and so on. The syntax of the del is-

del obj_name

To delete the last element from a list, apply negative indexing to the list, and offer it to the del keyword to erase it.

list_elems = ['cat', 'dog', 'fox', 'rabbit', 'elephant']

# Remove last element from list
del list_elems[-1]

print(list_elems)

# Remove third element from list
del list_elems[2]

print(list_elems)

['cat', 'dog', 'fox', 'rabbit']
['cat', 'dog', 'rabbit']

Remove element from list using remove() method

In Python, the remove() method removes the first occurrence of the element with the specified value. The syntax of the remove is-

list.remove(element)

Here, the element is the required parameter, which accepts the item value as an argument. This can be of any type: list, string, number, etc.

list_elems = [43, 45, 89, 29, 30, 63, 10]

# Remove element from list
list_elems.remove(89)
print(list_elems)

# Remove element from list
list_elems.remove(30)
print(list_elems)

[43, 45, 29, 30, 63, 10]
[43, 45, 29, 63, 10]

Remove element from list using clear() method

Python provides the clear() method to remove all the elements from the list. It returns an empty list after an operation.

list_elems = [43, 45, 89, 29, 30, 63, 10]

# clear list
list_elems.clear()

print(list_elems)

[]
