English Grammar – Active Passive Voice with Examples

Voice is the form of a verb used in a sentence which shows that either the verb does something or something happens on the verb itself.

Active Voice: A verb is said to be in the Active Voice when its form shows that the person or thing denoted by the subject does something.

Passive Voice: A verb is said to be in Passive Voice when its form shows that something is done to the person or thing denoted by the subject. It is used if it is not necessary to mention the doer as it is clear according to the situation.


These are the form to create passive voice of tenses.

Present Indefinite Tense

Passive Form – am/is/are + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
He sings a song. A song is sung by him.
This boy always wins the prize. The prize is always won by this boy.
I help you. You are helped by me.
She expects good marks. Good marks are expected by her.
She teaches me. I am taught by her.
People speak Bengali in West Bengal. Bengali is spoken in West Bengal.


Present Continuous Tense

Passive Form – am/is/are + being + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
Sita is teaching her sister. Her sister is being taught by Sita.
They are cutting the old trees. The old trees are being cut.
I am eating a banana. A banana is being eaten by me.
They are singing songs. Songs are being sung by them.
We are discussing the matter. The matter is being discussed.


Present Perfect Tense

Passive Form – have/has + been + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I have helped Ram. Ram has been helped by me.
Priska has disturbed me. I have been disturbed by Priska.
Someone has stolen my bag. My bag has been stolen.
He has respected Ram. Ram has been respected by him.


Past Indefinite Tense

Passive Form – was/were + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I ate a mango. A mango was eaten by me.
She helped you. You were helped by her.
The police arrested him. He was arrested.
He watched them. They were watched by him.
Someone stole my bag. My bag was stolen.


Past Continuous Tense

Passive Form – was/were + being + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
She was teaching me. I was being taught by her.
Labourers were digging a canal. A canel was being dug by the labourers.
They were killing animals for nothing Animals were being killed for nothing.


Past Perfect Tense

Passive Form – had been + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I had written the letter. The letter had been written by me.
I had informed the doctor. The doctor had been informed by me.
Somebody had stolen my bag. My bag had been stolen.


Simple Future Tense

Passive Form – will/shall + be + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I shall teach you. You will be taught by me.
She will help me. I shall be helped by her.
They will play cricket. Cricket will be played by them.
We shall discuss the matter tomorrow. The matter will be discussed tomorrow.


Future Continuous Tense

Passive Form – will/shall + be + being + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I shall be teaching you. You will be being taught by me.
They will be helping us. We shall be being helped.
He will be doing this. This will be being done.


Future Perfect Tense

Passive Form – will/shall + have been + v3

Active Voice Passive Voice
I shall have written the letter. The letter will have been written by me.
They will have informed us. We shell have been informed.


Imperative Sentences Active Passive Voice

Help him. Let him be helped.
Help the poor. The poor should be helped.
Don’t touch the wire. Let this wire not be touched.
