English Grammar – Simple Present Tense

We use the simple present tense when the action is general, happening regularly, universal truth and the things that will not change.

Rules of Simple Present Tense

If the subject is singular, append ‘s’ at the end of verb.

He plays
She plays
Ram comes

If the subject is plural, don’t append ‘s’ at the end of verb, like –

They come
We go

In case of ‘I’ and ‘You’, don’t append ‘s’ at the end of verb, like –

I play
You laugh

If the verb ends with ‘o’, ‘s’, ‘x’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, then append ‘es’ at the end of verb, like –

go – goes
teach – teaches
wash – washes
tax – taxes

If the verb ends with ‘y’ then replace ‘y’ with ‘i’ and append ‘es’ at the end of verb, like –

try – tries
study – studies
carry – carries

If the verb ends with ‘y’ and the letter before ‘y’ is any of the vowel (a, e, i, o, u) then does not replace ‘y’ with ‘i’, only append ‘s’ at the end of verb, like –

play – plays
buy – buys
obey – obeys

सूरज चमकता है।	The sun shines.
तारे टिमटिमाते हैं।	The stars twinkle.
मैं साइकिल से स्कूल जाता हूं।	I go to school by cycle.
वह साइकिल से स्कूल जाती है	She goes to school by cycle.
दुकानें सुबह 9 बजे खुलती हैं।	Shops open at 9 am.
यह सड़क दिल्ली तक जाती है।	This road goes to Delhi.
पुणे के लिए ट्रेन सुबह 8 बजे रवाना होती है।	The train for Pune leaves at 8 am.
वह दरवाजे की तरफ देखता है।	He looks at the door.
मेरा भाई रोज सुबह 5 बजे उठता है।	My brother gets up at 5 every morning.
दीवाली साल में एक बार आती है।	Diwali comes once a year.
पक्षी घोंसले का निर्माण करते हैं।	Birds build nests.
मुझे लगता है।	I think.
वह सोचता है।	He thinks.
वह धाराप्रवाह अंग्रेजी बोलता है	He speaks fluent english.
शहद मीठा है।	Honey is sweet.
पृथ्वी सूर्य का चक्कर लगाती है।	The earth moves round the sun.
माँ अपने बच्चों से प्यार करती है।	A mother loves her children.
विमान सुबह 5 बजे उड़ान भरता है।	The plane takes off at 5 am.
